Pubis & Labia Reconstruction

This type of plastic surgery is designed to enhance the structure and appearance of the female genitalia; therefore, falling within the category of genital cosmetic surgery. Also known as “labial reconstruction,” it can help resolve any physical discomfort due to enlarged or uneven labia minora and majora. The labia minora are the smaller interior vaginal lips, while the labia majora refers to the larger outer lips. Excess tissue in this area often occurs as the result of chronic irritation, a surplus of estrogen, and/or the effects of gravity during the normal aging process.

Reasons for Labiaplasty

Labial reconstruction of the labia minora is the most common type of genital cosmetic surgery. It is usually performed as a method of reducing the size of the inner lips, making them smaller and less visible so they do not protrude outside the labia majora, or outer lips. Women often seek this type of surgery out of embarrassment caused by the protrusion of one or both labia minora lips, as well as labia lips of uneven size. Some women have labiaplasty to reduce recurrent discomfort during cycling or walking. Regardless of the reasons for having labiaplasty, this type of surgery is becoming a popular choice among plastic surgery procedures.

The Procedure

During the labiaplasty surgery, the plastic surgeon uses a laser to trim away excess tissue from the labia minora or majora. An anesthetic will be administered to minimize discomfort during the surgery. The actual procedure generally takes between one and two hours. Most women experience some pain around the surgical site during the recovery period, although many return to work within three days. A postoperative visit will help ensure that the healing is proceeding as expected.

Common Concerns

Like all surgeries, labiaplasty has the potential for certain risks and side effects. These possible risk factors include nerve damage that may lead to loss of sensation, unsightly scarring, bleeding, infection and risks involving complications with anesthesia. An initial consultation will serve to provide you with answers to any questions or concerns you may have regarding labiaplasty.
