Plastic Surgery For Business Executives Is On The RiseBy Dr. William P. Aiello(August 21-September 3, 1990 - Long Beach Business Journal) The popularity of plastic surgery in the United States to improve one's body image and self-esteem is on the rise. In 1982, 32 percent of consumers approved of plastic surgery for themselves and others while, in 1988, this jumped to 48 percent. Naturally, the favorable climate and the outdoor lifestyle of Southern Californians have influenced many in the pursuit of improved health, fitness and physical appearance. No one can deny the importance of grooming, appearance and presentation in the corporate environment. Likewise, nothing can compare to the self-confidence we project when we feel good about how we look. Certainly, being well-tailored and groomed is a start, but even weekly manicures, facials and trims will not remove the angry furrows between the brows, or weather-beaten wrinkled skin from years of surfing and sailing, nor those puffy eyelids that make people think you're overtired or overworked. So, what can you do about that protruding abdomen or drooping breasts that just won't respond to all the dieting and exercise? That's right, it's time to see a plastic surgeon! Keep in mind, however, that your expectations need to be realistic. A facelift won't get you a better job or help keep your present one any more than a breast enlargement will improve your failing marriage. Aesthetic surgery can soften and improve the effects of sun-damaged and aging skin or correct acquired, congenital or inherited traits or deformities. Overall, this improvement in physical appearance will result in an even greater one for a person's body image, thereby enhancing self-esteem. The result is that the person will usually project a more positive attitude which is noted by others and is reflected in their business and personal relationships. Who, then, considers having plastic surgery? In 1988, 16 percent of aesthetic procedures were done on men. The most common procedures were nose surgery, eyelid lifts, liposuction and facelifts. In women, the top four procedures were liposuction, breast enlargement, eyelid lifts and facelifts. Fifty-one percent of patients were married and 83 percent had some college education while 58 percent had graduate education. Household income was less than $25,000 in 30 percent, while another 35 percent made between $25,000-$50,000. Although 32 percent thought about having surgery for more than two years, 43 percent considered it for tess than a year while 35 percent thought about it for one to two years. Fees for the procedures vary widely depending on location of practice, on-site operating facilities and other factors. The range of fees in Long Beach for the more common procedures, including operating room charges and anesthesia, are: breast enlargement, $3,500-$4,500; liposuction, $2,000-$4,500; nose surgery, $3,500-$5,000; facelift, $5,500-$7,500; eyelid lift, $3,500$4,500; and tummy tuck, $5,500-$7,500. It should be remembered that often the patient may think he or she needs a certain procedure but instead what is needed after seeing the surgeon in consultation may be either more or less complex than was anticipated and therefore the fees may change radically from what was quoted. Many people shop for plastic surgeons as they would for a plumber and often cost appears to be the deciding factor. This could be a very costly mistake. It is wise to be aware that fees quoted over the phone by one office may only reflect the surgeon's fee and those quoted by another office may include operating and recovery room charges, anesthesia, supplies, medications, garments, lab tests etc. When looking for a plastic surgeon keep in mind that nearly 50 percent of the physicians listed in the Long Beach GTE phone book are not trained in a "plastic and reconstructive surgery residency." Although they may list themselves as "Board Certified," this can be very misleading as they may be board certified dermatologists, ophthalmologists, ear, nose and throat doctors, gynecologists, etc. who are performing plastic surgery procedures. Similarly, one should not be confused with attestations such as "Board of Cosmetic Surgery" or "Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery." There is only one recognized "American Board of Plastic Surgery" by the American Medical Association (AMA). If you are still confused about the physician's credentials after speaking with the staff, call the American Society of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons, Inc. (ASPRS) at 708/228-9900, or the AMA.
