Breast Reconstruction in Orange County

Before and After

This is a very large topic and each individual will have a unique set of issues to deal with. In many cases the reconstruction is needed post mastectomy for breast cancer. However there may be indications for reconstruction because of congenital defects, traumatic injury, asymmetry of breast, acquired deformities from treating other conditions or illness and after large weight loss.

For any of these, a variety of techniques used for cosmetic reasons as well as reconstruction techniques may be employed. In some cases these can be done as combined procedures in one operating room session but, in other cases, as a series of surgical procedures over the course of months are necessary depending on the problem. There is an exhaustive list of procedures that can be used in combination for each breast. Below is a limited list of procedures that can be used alone or in combination to achieve the best results.

  1. Tissue expanders - Implants placed in chest wall that can be serially filled in the office and eventually replaced with a permanent saline or silicone breast implant .
  2. Flap reconstruction - This is where abdomen, back, or buttock skin and muscle are moved to reconstruct the breast by various techniques.
  3. Breast Augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) - Making the breast larger using implants (saline or silicone)
  4. Breast Reduction - Making the breast smaller
  5. Mastopexy - Lifting the breast tissue and nipple
  6. Nipple reduction - Making the nipple or areola smaller
  7. Skin grafts - Thin slice of skin placed to cover a defect or wound
  8. Nipple Reconstruction - Many techniques using flaps and skin grafts
  9. Tattooing - To color in areola to match the two sides
  10. Allograft Implants - Alloderm is a sheet of allograft material placed to fill in contour irregularities or defects
  11. Capsulectomy - removing the scar tissue (capsule) around the implant which has caused the breast to be hard and misshapened
