Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) Orange County
Cosmetic surgery of the ear, or Otoplasty, is an aesthetic procedure that alters the size, position, or proportion of the ears. The goal of Otoplasty surgery varies greatly depending on the changes that are desired by the patient. This page will review some of the most common topics related to the two most common Otoplasty procedures. Ear pinning, or a Set-Back Otoplasty, is performed to reduce the prominence of ears that stick out too much from the head. If one ear is positioned higher than the other, ear repositioning can create symmetry. Large, oversized ears can be addressed alone or in conjunction with other ear issues. This procedure is widely sought out by parents of children and adults alike to improve self-confidence. Ear pinning can provide a huge boost to your self-confidence and is a low-risk procedure that can be performed on children over the age of six. (When their ears have reached their full size.) If you have suffered an injury that has negatively impacted the shape or positioning of your ears, you may also be a candidate. The results of this procedure generally last a lifetime with minimal fluctuations.
Whether heavy earrings have damaged your ear lobes or they just don’t look as good as they did when you were younger, earlobe repair surgery can restore them to their previous state. Most commonly earlobe repair is done to correct the aftermath of a body modification trend known as earlobe gauging. As teenagers who bought into this look have grown up and entered the workforce or military, they are seeking to have their ears back to normal. Patients are often surprised to learn the repair is a bit more complicated than just stitching up the hole. It is a relatively short procedure, but does require reshaping of the lobe. The tunnel of skin where the gage earring was placed must be incised then re-approximate those edges back together. The procedure is usually done in the office under local anesthesia.
