Face Lift Orange County
A Face Lift is a surgical procedure that improves some of the most obvious visible signs of aging in the face. The loss of youthful contours in the face can be due to a variety of factors, including heredity, gravity, environmental conditions, and stress. A Face Lift corrects jaw line sagging and jowls by lifting and removing some of the loose skin and repositioning the muscle underneath. The technique that Dr. Aiello utilizes is a vertical lift that restores the soft tissues back to their original anatomical position, not a horizontal pull, causing and unnatural “windblown” look. The goal of a Face Lift is to give the face a rejuvenated, natural restoration. This page will review some of the most common topics related to Face Lift surgery. What does a face lift correct?
A Face Lift removes excess skin, tightens underlying tissues and muscle and redrapes skin on the mid face and jawline. It will correct:
- Sagging skin in your mid-face and jawline.
- Nasolabial Folds, the deep creases extending from your nose to the corners of your mouth.
- Jowls, the result of sagging and loss of muscle tone in the lower face.
It’s important to note, the skin, muscles and other tissues along the brow and surrounding the eyelids are very distinct, and cosmetic surgery to each of these areas requires an entirely different set of techniques than those used during a Face Lift. It is common for patients to choose to have an eyelid lift, brow lift or neck contouring at the same time as a Face Lift, but in these cases, Dr. Aiello will actually be performing multiple procedures in a single operation. I want my eye lids lifted, is that part of face lift?
Many people think a Face Lift is an all encompassing procedure that corrects everything on the face that has changed with aging. That’s understandable; after all, your eyes and forehead are part of your face too! However, a Face Lift on its own only addresses the lower two thirds of the face – the cheeks and jawline. Although it may have a positive effect on areas adjacent to the cheeks and eyes, a Face Lift will not correct a low sagging brow (forehead) or other areas of the face like droopy upper eye lids or lower eye bags.
Other surgical rejuvenation procedures typically performed in conjunction with a face lift to address other areas of the face are:
- Brow/Forehead Lift to correct a sagging, low forehead or deeply furrowed brow.
- Eyelid Surgery to correct drooping upper eye lids and reduce puffy lower eye bags.
- Neck Lift to address creased and sagging skin in your upper neck.
- Liposuction to the neck or jowls to remove any pockets of fat that will prevent a smooth contour.
Many patients seeking a Face Lift, are actually looking for total facial rejuvenation. They may be disappointed to realize that this requires much more than a simple Face Lift, but it is important to understand even though each area of the face and it’s anatomy require a different approach and procedure, they all work together to provide a total aesthetic outcome. During your consultation Dr. Aiello will make a treatment plan to help you achieve the best facial harmony in all of your features for whatever level of rejuvenation you desire.
Will all of my wrinkles be gone after my Face Lift?
Not necessarily. Your face shows signs of aging in three ways. Tightening the muscles and redraping the skin with a Face Lift only addresses one of the signs. You may also have fat volume loss and skin texture issues such as deep wrinkles and discoloration of your skin. Procedures to address these other two signs of aging are:
- Cheek Implants, Fat Grafting or Injectable Fillers to restore the volume from fat loss. This is usually seen in the hollowness of cheeks and temples.
- Laser, Chemical Peel or Dermabrasion to resurface the skin. This will soften the texture of wrinkles and improve skin tone and clarity.
These procedures are very commonly done in conjunction with a Face Lift and provide a more total rejuvenation of all the signs that contribute to aging facial features. As you read above, during your consultation Dr. Aiello will make a treatment plan to help you achieve the best outcome for whatever level of rejuvenation you desire. It’s important to know your choices and the type of correction they can provide!
Will my scars be hidden?
Your incisions will depend on the area of the face that is targeted and the amount of change you want. During your consultation, Dr. Aiello will recommend an approach based on your goals and facial characteristics, including the shape of your face. The placement and length of incisions vary, depending on the Face Lift technique that best suits you. Many patients are interested in a Minimal Incision Face Lift. Not all patients are candidates for this technique, but during your consultation Dr. Aiello will review all options with you. Regardless of the type of Face Lift you undergo, you will have incisions that involve the skin around your ear. Most commonly they continue down and around the front of your ears, hidden in the natural creases behind your ears in your hair. Face Lift scars can be virtually invisible, narrow, flat, and well placed behind the ear so you can still wear your hair back or short.
Are the results from a face lift long lasting?
When performed by an experienced, board certified cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Aiello, a Face Lift is designed to achieve results that not only look natural now, but will also age naturally with you. While nothing can stop the normal aging process, after a Face Lift you will always look years younger than you would have without the surgery. However, there are certain things you can do to keep your results looking their best. Maintaining a healthy, stable weight is important as significant weight fluctuations can cause skin to stretch out again. You should also adopt a consistent, quality skin care regimen to keep your skin healthy and protected from unnecessary aging.
Am I too old (or too young) for a Face Lift?
We hear this sentiment a lot from patients that may have waited till much later in life to address their facial aging or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, patients that feel they are too young to be considering a procedure they picture only older people needing. Techniques for Face Lift surgery can range from minimally invasive to more extensive, sophisticated surgery. Every patient at Ocean Plastic Surgery Center is evaluated and recommendations are based on their personal case. If you are older, but in good general health and have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a good candidate for a Face Lift. If you are younger, you may be a candidate for a Minimal Incision Face Lift. This technique is a great option, as we encourage patients considering a Face Lift to start addressing the signs of aging early, but the rate at which you may start to show certain signs of facial aging can be hereditary or lifestyle related and may need surgical intervention sooner. If at any age, you feel that your face does not reflect your youthful spirit and energy level, you have the option for a free consultation to get advice on taking steps to start preventing and correcting now!
