Facelift

The Procedure

Before and After

Facelift - Rhytidectomy

Many people think face-lifting corrects everything on the face that has changed with aging. It does not. Rhytidectomy commonly known as a facelift corrects poor jaw line deformation and jowls, sagging neck and banding and loose cheek skin and muscle. Depending on technique used it may produce some correction to the grooves from the nose to the mouth known as nasolabial folds. Likewise it may produce some lift just around the eyebrows. The lift is in an upward and back sweep that will lift the soft tissues back to a more anatomical position thereby giving the face a rejuvenated look.

What won't a facelift correct?

Although it may have a positive effect on areas adjacent to the cheek and neck, a Rhytidectomy will not correct low sagging eyebrows, drooping puffy eyelid, turn down corners of the mouth, wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. These will require additional procedures that are often combined with the facelift to maximize the rejuvenating effect. The brows and furrows above the nose on the forehead are often treated with Botox (a paralyzing medication) which stops the muscle action. A more permanent fix to the problem can be achieved by doing a forehead lift (see Forehead Lift with Endoscopic and Forehead / Coronal Lifts). For the eyelids a blepharoplasty (see Blepharoplasty/Eyelid Surgery) is indicated and for perioral (around the mouth) and periorbital (around the eyes) wrinkles you may need dermabrasion, peels or laser surgery to correct these. Occasionally a corner lift of the mouth maybe indicated to correct down turned corners. Likewise an upper lip reduction may be indicated if the distance from the nose to the lower lip has elongated giving the mid face a very aged appearance. Finally if the earlobes are large and saggy these can be reduced and occasionally if the nasolabial grooves are so prominent they maybe excised to reduce their appearance.

Another sign of aging commonly seen beside the vertical lines around the mouth is thin lips. These can be corrected with autologous fat injections (fat harvested from the patient) or dermal filler injections (like Radiesse or Restylane). Other adjunct procedures may include Botox for certain line around the eyes to soften their appearance.

All of these things will be discussed at the consultation to help you make the best informed decision on what will give you the best improvements that you desire and can afford. Many of these procedures can be done at one time but they can also be staged depending on your needs.

Downtime

Downtime is a big question for most people and since these procedures are being performed on the face there will be a period where bruising, redness, swelling and sutures may be apparent. Depending on whether you are doing the "blue plate special" (Quad blepharoplasty, Forehead lift, facelift, dermabrasion laser or peel around the mouth and eyes) or just a lower lid eyelid lift, will define how significant these conditions are. Usually for a facelift 7-10 days will see you through most of the obvious signs but makeup usually will need to be employed to cover some residual bruising. Your final results however till everything settles and heals is upwards of 4 months but usually by 2-3 weeks you are looking pretty decent for public viewing.
