RESURFACE: Chemical Peels Orange County
The goal of resurfacing the skin is to even skin tone, clear acne, improve the appearance of aging skin and make dull complexions glow. Skin peels and laser treatments along with a daily home care regimen are critical to achieving and maintaining optimal skin health. Resurfacing is the answer for all ages of patients that need to improve the texture, tone, or pigment of the skin on the face, chest, arms and hands. Diligent sunscreen use after any resurfacing procedure is imperative to protect your results and prevent further skin damage.
A chemical peel is a technique which involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin that removes the damaged outer layers of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. It is extremely beneficial for many skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, rosacea, acne and sun damage. By removing the build-up of dead skin cells and stimulating the regenerative process, you will notice marked improvements in the formation of wrinkles and fine lines, texture and tone of the skin, hydration, reduced pore size, clearing of blemishes and more balanced oil production and an overall healthier skin appearance.
TCA is a non-toxic chemical (trichloracetic acid), which has been used to perform skin peels for many years. It is a relative of vinegar (acetic acid.) When TCA is applied to the skin, it causes the top layers of cells to dry up and peel off over a period of several days to one week. When the old skin is peeled off, it exposes a new layer of undamaged skin, which has a smoother texture and more even color. Physicans prefer TCA peels for treating sun damage or melasma, usually in combination with prescription creams used at home, like hydroquinone and tretinoin. Dr. Aiello generally performs TCA peels at higher strengths and greater depths. This level of treatment shows drastically more improvement than a lighter peel and can only be performed by an experienced physician. A peel can be done in conjunction with facial plastic surgery for patients that also need improvement with their skin texture and tone. When not done with surgery, this TCA peel is usually done once or twice a year and does require some downtime – usually about a week – when the peeling is obvious. It is mandatory with this depth chemical peel, that patients pre-treat their skin prior to receiving a peel and maintain their skin at home with specified skin care products. As with all resurfacing treatments, long term results after a TCA peel are greatly contingent on lifestyle and skin care maintenance.
REVEPEEL™ is a medium depth TCA Peel that combines this TCA with three other peeling acids in an oil-based delivery system. The REVEPEEL™ is effective and safe for all skin types and colors. It is used for a variety of conditions including fine lines, wrinkles and severely sun damaged skin and can be used on the face, hands as well as other areas of the body. The REVEPEEL™ can be applied in office with no sedation in less than 20 minutes. Our specialist will assess your skin condition, type, thickness and area being treated to determine the depth of the peel you should receive. While impressive results can be seen after a single REVEPEEL™, many patients benefit from having them performed at regular intervals. It is also imperative to maintain the skin with proper home care products and avoiding sun exposure.
Laser resurfacing treatments are used to reduce many skin irregularities due to skin aging, photo damage and acne scars. The technique directs concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer.
The CO2 laser is an ablative carbon dioxide laser used in skin resurfacing. During this process, the upper layers of aged or damaged skin are vaporized by applying a controlled laser beam. The result is healing and restructuring of the skin. CO2 laser is done under anesthesia and is not to be confused with non-ablative laser treatments where the skin surface remains largely intact. CO2 lasers excel at treating deeper wrinkles, more severe textural changes from sun damage, wrinkles, acne scars, and surgical or traumatic scars. It can be used on the delicate eyelid skin and around the mouth. It is also a very effective treatment for sun damage and precancerous growths.
Dr. Aiello can combine laser resurfacing with a facelift or other facial surgical procedures to produce maximum rejuvenation results. Patients will see some immediate results with a CO2 laser treatment, but the full results are most noticeable after 3-6 months. After your skin heals, which may take up to 3-14 days, there will be a period of 4 to 6 weeks after that when your skin might be slightly pink. During this period, the skin will feel smoother and looks less blotchy. As the color returns to normal, you will see fewer lines, less blotchiness, and more glow. The long term results of a CO2 laser treatment are greatly contingent on lifestyle and skin care maintenance, but with proper skin care at home and sun avoidance, patients can maintain the good effects of a CO2 laser treatment for up to five years.
Dermabrasion is an intensive skin resurfacing treatment to help scars, wrinkles, pigmentation, and pre-cancerous lesions. It is not the same as Microdermabrasion, which is a far more superficial treatment. Dermabrasion is a skin-resurfacing procedure that uses a rapidly rotating device to sand the outer layers of skin. After dermabrasion, the skin that grows back is usually smoother and younger looking. It can decrease the appearance of fine facial lines and improve the look of scars, such as those caused by acne. Dermabrasion can be done alone, but is most commonly performed during facial cosmetic surgery.
