Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure of the nose that improves the appearance and proportion of your nose, enhancing facial harmony and self confidence. Surgery of the nose may also correct impaired breathing caused by structural abnormalities in the nose.
Rhinoplasty is performed either using a closed procedure, where incisions are hidden inside the nose, or an open procedure, where an incision is made across the columella, the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. Through these incisions, the soft issues that cover the nose are gently raised, allowing access to reshape the structure of the nose.
While most "nose jobs" are straightforward in their surgical approach, occasionally there is a need for cartilage grafting or nasal implants to correct depressions and acquired deformities. Sometimes the base of the nose where the nostrils attach to the face will be too flared and will require skin excision that will leave hardly discernable scars in the creases of the nose. An associated procedure with rhinoplasty is chin augmentation to balance the face and profile. If you suffer from airway obstruction additional internal nasal procedures can be performed to correct your breathing problems.
Complications are rare, but like all surgeries bleeding is of concern and activities should be limited for one month. As the swelling decreases the soft tissues, cartilage and bone heal. These structures may occasionally heal with slight irregularities which could require revision six to twelve months later when all healing finishes.
After your procedure is completed a splint is placed on the outside to support and protect the new structures during initial healing. Occasionally depending on what is done some packing may also be put inside the nose. While the initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, it may take up to a year for your new nasal contour to fully refine. During this time you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose as it refines to a more permanent outcome.
